SheetReader is a free online Excel viewer for when a cell's long text isn't fully visible due to Excel's row height limit. It doesn't change your XLSX/XLS file's structure — it lays out the columns from your selected row side by side in independent scrolling panels. It's useful for reading and comparing GPT and Gemini responses, translations, support transcripts, or survey answers stored in a single long cell.
It's often described as a "maximum cell height," but what's actually limited is row height. Excel's row height can be set up to 409 points, and column width is capped at 255 characters. A cell itself can store up to 32,767 characters, but when a cell holds a long paragraph or several headings and list items, AutoFit row height or text wrapping alone may not let you read all of it at a glance.
For example, if one column holds a question and separate columns hold a GPT response and a Gemini response, comparing the full text of each becomes especially hard to read on one screen. The same applies to translations, support transcripts, and long-form survey answers.
SheetReader offers an alternative for this: without changing your spreadsheet's structure, it lays out the columns from your selected row side by side in wide reading panels.
AutoFit only works within Excel's maximum allowed row height. Even with text wrapping turned on, a cell holding several paragraphs or a list can be uncomfortable to read at a glance. A single long row can also make scanning and comparing the rest of the sheet more tedious.
Merging cells can make the display area look larger, but it works against your data's structure. It can cause unexpected results or errors in sorting, filtering, AutoFill, formula references, and PivotTables. SheetReader instead keeps your original cell structure untouched and provides a separate, read-only view.
